Mini Movie Review: The Cooler - I've been wanting to see this for some time now, and it was a really bittersweet movie about love and luck and how they affect people - with a happy(?) ending. Total fantasy, but very enjoyable - much due to the lovely acting by William H. Macy. (****)

Today's favorite winter dish, Beef and Barley Stew

Scrubs returned back in new episode rotation! I think the break was bad for the show though, as it seemed to need some more funny-building than it actually delivered. It was also VERY Ally McBealish - for example when JD was shoved into the backpack.

Mini Movie Review: X-men. I've always liked the story, but I'm not sure what took me so long to watch this first one. I do think I liked X2 better, but this was rather enjoyable as well. I was most impressed with the Wolverine vs. Mystique fight scene at the end. (***)

I also really wanted to get the new Shakira album, but I opted for variety instead.

I have *really* been craving homemade SERIOUS hot chocolate lately. I have never made it though, and my track record for melting chocolate is not that good. I've never been much for candy making - I always burn the chocolate or somesuch. That really is a bummer too, because I lovelovelove Divinity, but I'd never make it in a million years. :( Speaking of holiday baking, I still haven't decided what I'm going to make this year. Better get crackin' though - gonna have to do it all over the next week. Any requests? We're having Christmas dinner over at my cousin's grandparent's house this year. When I asked her grandma (my aunt's mother) what I should bring to contribute - she replied, One of your famous desserts. Now this lady is a fabulous cook, and her daughter is one of my idols (in the kitchen and beyond), so it's wonderful to get such a compliment. :) Now I have to decide what to make for that too!

TV pop culture rumination:
* I actually watched an Apprentice - I'm not a fan of the Donald, but after finding out that a local gal (Felisha) made it to the final four, I promptly watched her get her walking papers. I was kinda bummed, but proud that Idaho did something good. :)
*The Survivor finale was probably one of my favorites so far - aside from the lame and very mellow jury questioning (which was surprising considering the personalities in this season!). My anger that Lydia made it to the final four was finally justified when she got her butt kicked out - there was no way she should have even been on the jury even, and she got that far anyway! I actually sort of rooted for her (not to win, just in not getting voted off right off the bat) at the beginning of the season because she was so sweet and tried really hard, but that just didn't cut it when it came down to it. Plus after she threw the hissy fit over not getting food handed to her when she didn't earn it really irked me. My opinion didn't only change about her - it also changed about Bobby Jon and Rafe. I totally thought that BJ was the oafish, crude redneck freak up until the episode he was voted off - his behavior in dealing with the absolutely psychotic Jamie was impressive - and obviously he was the better man. :) Initially, I wanted Rafe (was anyone else floored when he said something about being a gay, mormon boy??? I didn't think that was possible...) to win. He was a strong competitor, sneaky in a decent way and just a good guy. Then after he was unreasonable when Cindy won the car and didn't give the other four cars instead, I just lost respect. Cindy was also a favorite of mine, in fact, had she not been voted off I still would have been rooting for her. When it came down to Steph and Danni, I really didn't care too much who won - they both deserved it, although I do believe that Steph was a better player and should have won based on that, but Danni got it instead because the jury voted by emotion and not the finalists "skills an playing ability". I have only liked a few of the Survivors, but this was definitely one of my favorites. For those of you that are interested, there is a Survivor blog. I actually would REALLY love to get on this show. REALLY. I might even apply for the next one!
*Boondocks was made into a TV show recently, and I've been giving it a chance. Don't know if I will keep watching it very long - I love the cartoon, but the show is a little eh for me. Huey and Riley are adorable though, so I'll watch another episode or so.
*I randomly caught The Shield and ended up really liking it. Surprisingly enough! I've also finally caught up with the season of Law & Order: SVU which was taking a back seat to Bones.
*I think that one of the main reasons that I like Criminal Minds so much is because I absolutely adore the resident geek, Reid. I don't think I could stand that kind of dude in reality, but on the show, I just love his knowledgable geekiness. He's had some good episodes, especially one where he was used as a pawn to calm down a schitzophrenic gone awry on a train. Good stuff.
*I totally think that Quinten is the Carver on Nip/Tuck. Last week's plane crash episode was fantastic - at first I thought it was a bit cheesey, but I was sold by the end. In fact, Julia and Sean's scene at the end where he admits his weaknesses and her strengths was just brilliant.

1. When is the last time you rode the bus? "The bus." Hmmm....I think the last bus I rode was when I went on a road trip with the Oregon State Dance Team/Football Team/Cheerleaders/Marching Band to Seattle in 1996 or 1997.

2. Describe the last time you stood up for a cause: Well, yesterday I completed my annual pledge form for our charity deductions. I give $5/month each to Oregon State, the Idaho Human Society, and the Women & Children's Alliance. I always feel bad that I don't really have the money to give that much, but then I saw my end-of-year pay statement, and felt a little bit better. :)

3. Have you visited Alabama? I believe I've driven through it....

4. Have you ever attended a rally? A MLK Jr. rally at Boise State, my Jr. or Sr. year of High School

5. Have you ever been arrested? Amazingly, only once. When I was 17, I was arrested for curfew violation with Brandi and another friend of ours. We had alcohol in the car. We were the only under-age people in the station that night (they had set up a roadblock) that didn't have to get a breathalyzer (they didn't see our alcohol!), and the only ones that were allowed to leave and "drive ourselves home".

Music Memoirs - Top 5 Beautiful Voices

And if you're so disposed, tell us why you picked the voices you did and if you want to share a favorite song by each, feel free!

1. Stevie Nicks/Christine McVie - I love them both, and it's hard to pick one over the other. They're especially good when singing together. I love so many of their songs, I can't pick a favorite.

2. Poe - She sings so smooth it's like silk. Angry Johnny is a favorite.

3. Nina Simone - Need I say more?

4. Shakira - I'm not usually a fan of Latino music, but Shakira rocks my socks - whether in English or not. Objection Tango and La Tortura are two of my favorites.

5. Tori Amos - I love sultry - she can sing anything in any style and make me love it. I have to say the first song of hers I ever heard is my favorite: Silent All These Years.

Appetizer - When was the last time you did something you would consider courteous, what was it, and who was it for? I am always having to sweep leaves away from my front door - piles. Yesterday when I swept, I swept the entire doorway area, including in front of my neighbor's door. Shook off their doormat too. Awww.

Salad - If you were to have a painting done of you alone, what would you want the background to be? The Ocean and a lighthouse scene - maybe Haystack Rock.

Soup - Describe your voice. - Oh boy. I always thought I had a boyish voice. Lately whenever I hear it, I think I sound whiny and more high-pitched. It is certainly not one of my better attributes!

Main Course - What is something you would like to do, but you're afraid of the risk(s)? I'm not generally scared of "physical" things, but after recently watching an episode of I Shouldn't Be Alive while over at my brother's (it was the Shark Survivor episode), I don't think I could ever go very far out into the ocean in anything smaller than your standard-sized cruise liner.

Appetizer - What did you look like when you were a teenager? - Like This.

Salad - Whose advice do you listen to? - Varies - if it makes sense to me, I'll listen to advice from a friend, relative, or acquaintance/kowerker/random person. If it doesn't make sense to me, I won't follow anyone's advice but my own.

Soup - Name a book you would like to memorize. - Uh - there really would be no reason to do this, unless you wanted to be pretentious. I guess the dictionary could be a practical use - at least I'd never have to look up a word I didn't know the meaning to anymore!

Main Course - How often are you sick? - Far too often - thx allergies! I usually get the flu in January (this year I got it in November though!) - usually ends up developing into Bronchitis. I also have hay fever from February to August, typically - with sporadic sinus infections. Good times!

Dessert - Do you like or dislike change? - Depends - for the most part I like it. I abhor stagnancy, but then I can also easily become used to a situation that is positive. I like to evolve.

Food: The only thing of note is that I made some most excellent roasted cornish game hens. I've never made them before, so I was worried, but my little experiment came out well! I don't have a recipe (since I just winged it), but I can tell you I stuffed the birds with butter and a brown/wild rice mixture that I'd diced some pecans and dried apricots into. I followed that up by slathering the hens with an apricot jam and spicy mustard (about a 3:1 ratio) before baking it. They were incredibly good, and I could kick myself for being too hesitant to try them in the past.

Winter: Whelp, it really is winter now in Boise. It's so cold I have to scrape windows both before work and when I leave. :( We've also got a nasty inversion that isn't helping me at all. It was incredibly foggy last night, and tonight doesn't look to be much better. I'm just glad I don't have to drive to Caldwell to get home anymore!

TV: Did anyone else check out the "extended ending" for CSI: Miami online after last night's episode? I thought it was quite a disappointment after all of the hype, and the "secret" had already been let out in the previews for next week. Any guesses on the "mole"? I'm thinking they're trying to get people suspicious of Delco (on account of the fact he's a bad drug user), but I don't think it's him. I have a theory.....

I was also let down by the 3-D Medium - I thought the story line was inventive and the idea was pretty darn cool, but when it came down to it, they repeated "3-D scenes" and the scenes were also blurry......

In Survivor gossip - I was all for Bobby Jon getting the boot a few weeks ago, until the episode that he actually got it. I don't know how much the show's production team misrepresents their players, but I think BJ got a lot of it - I was really impressed with how he handled things in his last few days. I was really unhappy that he was kicked off before Jaimie, but he got his last week. I guess at this point, I'm kinda rooting for Cindy - although she seems like a pouty princess on occasion, she sure kicks butt in challenges and doesn't pull any crap with anyone else - calls it like it is. I gotta respect someone that can win without being a devious snake (although it's not always the best TV now, is it?)

I've been addicted to the Food Network's two new shows, Behind the Bash and Sugar Rush. In a recent episode of BtB, Hollywood Book Bash, the party was for Michael Madsen who had recently released a book of poetry. I have always had a fangirl crush on Madsen, so I am definitely going to check out that book! On a side note, I had no idea that Virginia Madsen was his sister....so there you go! As for Sugar Rush, it's just fantastic adventures around various bakeries and chocolatiers/candy shoppes - almost makes me want to be a pastry chef, but that really isn't my favorite kind of cooking (which is surprising, I'd say!). If you love dessert, I'd really check this show out!

Friday's Feast - #70

Appetizer - When do you feel impatient? More like when do I not feel impatient. I'm usually running late, so I am perpetually trying to move. I think the thing that drives me the most bonkers in this department is when I'm talking to a slow talker. You know, those people that make dramatic pauses and drag out sentences longer than necessary - always when I'm most busy. My impatience is awful.

Salad - How many times in your life have you had a broken heart? - I think that every time my ex-husband and I broke up my heart broke a little (we were together on and off for 12 years, I can't really tell you how many times we broke up - but we lived together five separate times (excluding when we were separated because we couldn't move back to Idaho together at the same time). I can't really say that anyone else ever really broke my heart - I was upset a time or two, but not broken.

Soup - Name a book you would like to see made into a movie. - The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe

Main Course - If you could thank one teacher for what they taught you, who would it be and what would you thank them for? Oregon State professor Courtney Campbell - he taught a few courses in my Philosophy track - two of which were the best courses I've ever taken in my life: Death & Dying and Ethics. I took the Death & Dying course during the spring of '99 - when Columbine happened. That was a particularly emotional course (although not likely near as emotional as the one he had where a kid killed himself during that course) and it was really interesting to study all of the things we did about death. I have had very few instances of death that I've had to really deal with, so it really was a fantastic learning experience. The ethics course was great in that he was so great with ethical debates about not positing his position nor judging anyone for what they said about any given topic. He really let people delve into the subject matter without restriction, prejudice or stifling.

Dessert - What is your favorite kind of pie? That depends on the day! I love pecan pie, banana creme (although I'm very picky - Safeway's is about the only store bakery kind I'll eat), French Silk and lemon meringue.

Have you ever had a curfew? Yeah. As a freshman/sophomore it was midnight - or whenever a sporting event/competition ended I had to come straight home. Junior/senior year it was 3 am until I screwed up and it was pulled back to midnight.

Most dangerous thing you've done: Getting extremely wasted, going to a concert, staying up all night, then driving to Seattle (from Portland) because "it sounded like fun".

Do you respect people more for staying through difficult times or knowing when to call it quits? Both, but I'd have to say I'd put staying through difficult times higher. There's a point where you just start looking like a fool, and you need to stop, but in general, working through hard times builds character.

Name a TV show that made a huge splash in the beginning, but has since gone downhill Will & Grace - I can't even watch it for Karen any more, and I luuuv me some Anastasia Beaverhausen. :(

Honesty, open communication and trust (Although for me, that goes hand-in-hand with honesty...if I can't trust someone to be honest with me, even if it's something I may not want to hear, why would I dream of being their friend?)

I hardly EVER dream, and 99% of the ones I remember are nightmares, so this would be a blessing! I would dream of traveling through Ancient Greece mythology.

During a few nights last week, I watched the two Oprah from the Katrina Catastrophe - episodes, and I ended up bawling all night. Whenever there is some sort of disaster or such, I typically read about them and avoid the television - something about seeing the moving images makes things seem all to real - print and online media are easier to keep some sort of surrealistic view about. I still feel pretty worthless when I realize there isn't much I can do for these people. I know you're all probably sick of this topic, but here are some things I've gleaned that you may be interested in.

Regarding Terri Schialvo - I'm torn on the issue. One thing I know for sure though, is that if they let her die through starvation and dehydration, that that is completely fucked up - there should be assisted suicide in these situations. Even if she only has the mental/emotional capacity of a plant, plants have been proven to react to stimuli and FEEL. There is something so wrong in letting someone who alledgedly hurt herself die such an inhumane death, while Scott "I killed my wife and unborn child" Peterson gets off free via the Lethal Injection gravy train. How just is that? At this point, I think I will reiterate the importance of having a Living Will (Idaho and Oregon link only).

The 6th Annual Golden Tomatoes Awards from Rotten Tomatoes I've seen two of the top 5, 13 total, and three I've only been able to manage watching half of. I'm quite shocked considering I didn't see many movies this year!

In the Jan/Feb (I believe) edition of Blender, the article 33 Things You Should Know About Nirvana was pretty interesting. One thing that stood out rather poignantly to me though was a quote from Courtney. Apparently both she and Kurt had been on Ritalin for most of their childhood. She then said something along the lines of ....when you grow up on something that makes you feel like that, what else are you going to do when you get older but to find something to take its place. This is so sad - while there is a huge amount of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY involved in keeping yourself off of drugs, what chance did these guys really have? It also tells me that they likely did not really NEED the drug and that it was just a "behavior modifier" for thier parents. It makes me shudder to even think about how many needlessly medicated children there are out there, and what that medicating will do to their views on what is acceptable and necessary to live. So scary.....

They always told us that it prevented us from being able to properly grip the tassels. These kids nowadays have things SOOOO EASY!!!

After this post, I will no longer be discussing this election madness. I realize that it is unproductive to dwell on what should have been or could have been and that to deal with WHAT IS is my only hope for moving on through the next four years. Addionally, I hate this bickering that I'm seeing and hearing about all over stuff that we were able to rationally discuss BEFORE the election, but all the decency has hit the window. Please do not pick a fight with me, I am over the situation and moving on....

However, I would like to share some post-election information that I've gleaned....of all kinds - pro and con.

You Are How You Eat

The Boise Weekly made my day today. There used to be a cool buttrawk bar in town (it closed during my duration in Oregon unfortunately) that had the best multi-drinker bucket drinks EVER. The name was even cool, The Derailer. Well, good ole BW provided the recipe.

You'll need a big bucket or a small vat for this one. 2 c. rum, 2 c. gin, 2 c. vodka, 2 c. amaretto almond liqueur, 1 c. triple sec, 2 c. peach schnapps, 1 c. grenadine, 1 gallon cranberry juice, 1 can grapefruit juice, 2 c. sloe gin, 1 bottle Sprite. Mix all well and add the Sprite when you're just about ready to serve.
If that doesn't say PARTY!!!, I don't know what does. The year I turned 21, a friend of mine from Idaho Falls came up to visit me and we drank a ton of other stuff, then split a derailer (I'm not sure how much it was, but it was SMALLER THAN THIS RECIPE MAKES. He ended up puking all over Merritt's while I ate some scones. Good Times.
